***3 Stars***
This is a YA, Sci-fi novel that revolves mostly around the developing relationship between Beckit (an African-American teenaged girl from planet earth that has no memories of her early childhood and is a very unpopular girl that has a spot on the school swim team) and Aaron (a 1000+ year old "Knight" from the planet Traterra). After Beckit experiences a personal tragedy, she is thrown in with Aaron in this whirlwind adventure that lands her on a different planet that is akin to Earth but with paranormal elements. Throw in her hispanic bff Meka, a gay and snarky werewolf, and a very smooth yet bisexual vampire and you have a pretty interesting, multicultural motley crew. They experience a lot of violence and Aaron kicks a lot of serious ass. We learn that Beckit is of some importance on this strange planet and her services are needed to accomplish a goal that is important to the livelihood of those that live there.
The language is amusing and entertaining and easy to read. There are a few love triangles involved within these pages, just a warning, and it ends in a huge cliff-hanger! However, there is a good underlying message here and it's pretty true to today's social obstacles such as interracial and same-sex relationships.
I am giving this read three stars because I found myself having trouble following along with some of the transitions and struggled with understanding why Aaron was attracted to Beckit to begin with, let alone why two men were fighting over her affections. The book also left a lot of unanswered questions (important ones) that will hopefully be resolved in Book 2: Honored, which is available for purchase now.
Overall, if you are a YA and Science Fiction fan, I think you will enjoy this very creative read.
